Precautions for using Beamlines

Carrying the certificate of completion of training course

  • Among the team members, those operating the beamline equipment and experimental facilities and those performing auxiliary work such as changing samples must take the training course (e-learning) via Radiation Management System and pass the final test. The registration procedure as a radiation worker or worker handling beamlines will be completed when you have passed the final test. Once you have passed the final test, you will be able to print the Certificate of Completion of Training Course on your My Page.
  •

  • Users must print out their Certificates of Completion of Training Course themselves and make sure it is available for NanoTerasu staff to view at any time while they are in the experiment hall.
  •

  • Users visit NanoTerasu only for data analyses and discussions are not required to take the training course. In such cases, do not touch beamlines or experimental facilities. Follow the instructions and guidance of beamline staff and the project leaders and pay attention to safety.

Use of experimental hutches

Experimental hutches are equipped with an interlock system to prevent users from being exposed to radiation. However, improper use of experimental hutches will lead to the interruption of experiments, emergency stoppage of accelerators, and in the worst case, radiation incidents. Make yourself familiar with the information provided in the training course at the time of your registration/renewal of registration as a radiation worker and the instructions of beamline staff before you conduct experiments.

To introduce the radiation beam into an experimental hutch, it is necessary to follow the exit sequence to set the experimental hutch to the “normally closed”status.

  • Confirm that no one except you remains inside the hutch when you carry out the exit sequence.
  • The starter of the exit sequence (limited to radiation workers) must be the last to leave the hutch.
  • Follow the specified steps to open the automatic door of the “normally closed” experimental hutch after verifying that the shutter is closed.
  • Consult beamline staff before opening manual doors and cable ducts. Do not open manual doors or cable ducts when the experimental hutch is in the“normally closed” status.
  • Do not displace the fixed shields, such as beam stoppers, in the hutch. Consult beamline staff before displacing movable beam stoppers upon switching between hutches. (In principle, users are not allowed to displace them.)

Waste

As a general rule, users must take back all items they bring into NanoTerasu for experiments.
* Leaving items at NanoTerasu without permission or disposing of them improperly may result in penalties.

* In the event of large-scale disasters or accidents, including fire, the project leader may be asked to report the safety status of project team members.

In case of disasters

Fire

In case of fire, call the designated numbers and, if possible, attempt initial fire extinction while ensuring your safety.

  • If the cause of the fire is electrical equipment, first disconnect the supply of electricity to the equipment on fire.
  • Use dry chemical fire extinguishers instead of water to extinguish the fire.
  • Users who are not carrying out initial fire extinction must evacuate immediately.

Earthquakes

Follow the instructions below if you feel a large tremor caused by an earthquake.

In principle, stay inside the building when an earthquake occurs since NanoTerasu has been constructed to be resistant to earthquakes of the Great East Japan Earthquake class.

  • Remain calm and secure your personal safety.
  • Move away from large objects that could fall or fall over and take cover under a sturdy table, etc.
  • After the earthquake, turn off the gas or put out any fire. Give aid to injured people if necessary.
  • If an evacuation instruction is given via the public address system, follow the instruction and head to the nearest evacuation area.
  • Do not use the elevators.

Minor injuries and poor physical condition
  • In principle, visit the nearest medical institution to receive medical care forinjuries and poor physical conditions.
  • During office hours (from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays) of the Users Office, you may use beds or receive first aid in the Resting Rooms in some cases. Refer to the Use of Resting Rooms for details.

* In accordance with the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device (PMD) Act, NanoTerasu does not dispense nonprescription medicines (oral medicines, etc.) to users because nonprescription medicines may cause serious allergic reactions or side effects depending on the individual’s genetic predisposition and physical condition. Carry appropriate medicines with you upon the advice of your doctor or pharmacy.

Radiation incidents

Contact the Central Monitor Room immediately and ask for directions when one of the following incidents occurs.

  • When a reusable radioactive material or a small sealed radioactive source is stolen or missing.
  • When unplanned radiation exposure has occurred and the effective doses pertaining to that exposure exceed or may exceed 1 mSv for radiation workers and 0.1 mSv for people other than radiation workers (including someone who has entered the restricted areas in operation, such as accelerator tunnels and hutches, by mistake).

Chemical accidents

If you are bringing chemicals and reagents into NanoTerasu, make yourself familiar with their properties by referring to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and prepare necessary medicines so that you can provide first aid by yourself in case an injury or sickness occurs as a result of exposure to those chemicals.

  • Depending on the symptoms, call and report to the designated numbers in accordance with the type of injury.
  • If you provided first aid, contact the Central Monitor Room immediately after.

* Emergency showers are located near the Central Control Room in the experimental hall, Subentrance 2, and the Facility Maintenance Room 1.

Oxygen deficiency accidents

Inert gas is not hazardous itself but causes anoxia when it permeates a room.

In general, you may experience the following symptoms when the atmospheric concentration of oxygen is below 21%.

Oxygen level [%]Symptoms
(21)(Normal)
12-16Rapid pulse, increase in respiratory rate, headache, and dizziness. Impaired concentration.
9-14mpaired judgement. Mental confusion. Partial loss of memory. Increase in body temperature. Cyanosis.
6-10Loss of consciousness. Central nervous system damage. Convulsion. Cyanosis.
6 or lessComa, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest.

If you find someone suffering from anoxia,

  • call out for help, and
  • remove the afflicted person from the room while holding your breath to prevent anoxia. Then, call and report to the designated numbers in accordance with the type of injury.
  • To avoid a secondary accident, do not act by yourself when it takes time to rescue an afflicted person.
  • When you handle liquefied gas such as liquid nitrogen in experimental hutches and surrounding rooms, make sure not to vaporize a large amount of gas at once.

Other precautions
  • In general, an injured person must be transported to a medical institution by ambulance in cases that require prompt attention by a doctor, including a burn covering a palm-size or larger area, serious bleeding, fracture, clouding or loss of consciousness, and respiratory or cardiac arrest.
  • If you hit your head severely, visit a medical institution regardless of the presence of external injury or impaired consciousness. When an injured person is transported to a medical institution by ambulance, a member of the same project team should accompany the injured person and communicate with the home institution of the injured person and the NanoTerasu staff.
