Call for 2026A Public Use of Coalition Beamline Proposals
For the 2026A term (scheduled for April to September 2026), the Coalition Beamlines will be accepting applications for General Proposals and Advanced Research and Development Proposals. Please read the following instructions in full before preparing your application. Please also refer to the “2026A NanoTerasu Call for Proposals -Overview-” in addition to this information page.
1. Proposals
(1) General Proposal
The General Proposals is for non-proprietary research; users must publish their research result in a refereed journal or equivalent (refereed proceedings, Doctoral thesis, etc.) and are exempt from paying the beamtime fee. For research to be considered non-proprietary, users must (1) submit a NanoTerasu Experiment Summary Report within 60 days of the completion of each experiment and (2) publish their research in the form of a refereed journal (incl. refereed proceedings and Doctoral thesis), or a technical journal approved by JASRI, and register the published works with the Publications Database within three years from the end of the research term.
(2) Advanced Research and Development Proposals
The advanced Research and Development Proposal falls under the category of user research proposals aimed at (1) pioneering advanced use of synchrotron radiation, and (2) expanding the scale of facility-based research. It involves the development and upgrading of beamlines. Applicants are expected to install or bring in their own equipment for use on the beamline.
*Please make sure to have a thorough discussion with the person in charge of the beamline you are applying for before submitting your proposal for an Advanced Research and Development proposal.
2. Research Period and Beamlines Available to Users
(1) Research Period
From April 2026 to September 2026 (tentative)
(2) Beamlines Available to Users
Please refer to “Table 5 Features of Coalition Beamlines” in the “Call for 2026A NanoTerasu Research Proposals”.
3. Proposal Submission
Special Notes Regarding the Application:
Please submit your application upon agreeing to the following terms.
- Information on proposals used Coalition Beamlines for public use will be shared with the Photon Science Innovation Center (hereinafter referred to as “PhoSIC”).
- When publishing research results, it is necessary to clearly state that the results were obtained using a PhoSIC beamline.
- If you intend to publish results obtained with technical support from PhoSIC or JASRI, or to file intellectual property rights based on such contributions, prior consultation with the respective parties is required regarding the handling of such matters.
(1) General Proposal
Applicants/project leaders are required to submit proposals online through the web-based proposal submission system. Before starting the application process, please first carefully read the “Call for 2026A NanoTerasu Research Proposals -Overview-.”

For both General Proposals and Advanced Research and Development Proposals, if there are any months between April and August during which it would be difficult to carry out your experiment, please indicate this in Section 8 “Describe the significance etc.” of the application form, as this information will be used for scheduling purposes.
4. Submission Deadline (General Proposal/Advanced Research and Development Proposal)
Tuesday, November 11, 2025, 10:00 am (Japan time)
5. Proposal Review
(1) General Proposal
The scientific and technical value, the degree of expectation to produce results, the necessity of NanoTerasu as a research tool, and the technical feasibility and safety of the experiment are comprehensively reviewed. For details, please refer to the ” Basic Policies regarding Proposal Selection for Public Use at Specific Synchrotron Radiation Facilities Established by the National Institute of Quantum Science and Technology”.
(2) Advanced Research and Development Proposal
The scientific and technical value, the degree of expectation to produce results, the necessity of NanoTerasu as a research tool, and the technical feasibility and safety of the experiment are comprehensively reviewed. In addition, the review will assess whether the proposal is expected to contribute to pioneering advanced use of synchrotron radiation or to expanding the scale of facility-based research.
For details, please refer to the “Basic Policies regarding Proposal Selection for Public Use at Specific Synchrotron Radiation Facilities Established by the National Institute of Quantum Science and Technology”.
6. Notification of Review Results
Review results will be available on “My Page” of the UI site in early February 2026.
7. Report Submission
Users are required to submit an Experiment Summary Report online within 60 days of their experiment. This requirement applies to both General Proposals and Advanced Research and Development Proposals. Submitted reports are made publicly available online two weeks after the report submission deadline for the last experiment of the term (60 days after the end of each half-year research term + two weeks). For details, click here.

8. Publication of Research Results
Publish your research in the form of a refereed journal (incl. refereed proceedings and Doctoral thesis), or a technical journal approved by JASRI, and register the published works with the Publications Database within three years from the end of the research term. In the publications, please clearly state that the results were obtained through the use of the NanoTerasu specifying the relevant experiment title and proposal number.
*Preparations are underway to apply the peer-reviewed SPring-8/SACLA Research Report and the Technical Journal approved by JASRI to NanoTerasu.
